On Monday in class, Georgia and I went through our entire play and deciphered which parts we needed to memorize more thoroughly. We scheduled a rehearsal for Tuesday, in which we put together an initial layout for our scene (pictured below) and determined the initial lighting, aside from performing to ourselves a few times to solidify memorization. We both felt good about the performance of our scene on Wednesday in class, but we couldn’t figure out what was quite missing. This uncertainty was mostly resolved by our rehearsal with Amber on Saturday evening - the lighting was improved to show our faces more, and the couch and piano switched positions to use the lighting to our advantage. We are still unsure how to incorporate the stairs prop, but will figure it out as rehearsals progress, both in and out of class. We also clarified the level of physical intimacy between Elias and Jenny, which will definitely improve the reality of our scene.

One challenge to face in the coming weeks is the particular part of the scene where Elias has to yell at Jenny. Amber offered lots of helpful insight in regard to it, but it is ultimately up to Gabe to deliver the lines in a way that justifies Elias’ anger while maintaining a distance from the content of the scene / action due to anger.

Sam and had our first rehearsal last week on Tuesday because of illnesses and flooded schedules. But we were able to be very productive in the time that we had. We were able to figure out what our set and props were going to be. We figured that because there is not much moving around in the scene we thought we would have a smaller space, and have no props because there are none required for it. We memorized most of our lines but of course were still a little choppy with them, but by the time we meet with Amber we should have them down. It seemed that the real thing we had to work on was getting our lines down with our pauses, those are super crucial to the mood of the play. Besides that we made great strides forward, and still preparing!

Dallas and I weren't available to meet in person over Thanksgiving break due to him living in Utah. But we managed to Facetime each other and run through our lines.

Since Terrell and I are both drowning in thesis, our first rehearsal happened over Facetime. We read through lines and helped each other memorize our script. Though Facetime isn't as helpful as being in person, so that we are able to move with our script, this worked well for memorization purposes. If we were to work together over Facetime again, I think it would be beneficial to even read through the script standing, especially since we were in the early phases of memorizing. This might allow for bodily movement and memorization that would benefit the process more than sitting or being stagnant while reading.

Because of Thanksgiving Break, Kayla and I weren't able to meet in person to rehearse. Instead we worked on memorizing our lines, props and outfits, and stage directions. During rehearsals, It felt natural to start the scene off sitting down on a bench and staying stagnant until the scene's climax arises. But taking Amber's advice, we decided to start the scene standing up (Kayleen is leaning on a structure as Doug walks into the scene). This allows the kinetic energy in the scene to start off with a bang rather than steadily increase as the scene progresses (the easiest approach).

Kayla and I met on Friday, November 16th in the Troom to rehearse our scene. We combed through our script and marked more beats that we initially missed and different moods that need to be translated into actions. For example, after Doug reveals that he spoke to Kayleen's father we decided that there should be a noticeable three seconds of silence before Kayleen says her next line. Also, we discussed compromises in the scene's stage directions that wouldn't disrupt our performance of the scene. Instead of Doug literally kissing Kayleen on the mouth, Doug will passionately kiss Kayleen's hand (for the sake of the actor's comfort).

Gabe and I were both out of town for Thanksgiving this week, but we FaceTimed to discuss and practice our scene. We are working on getting to know our characters better and figure out what exactly their goals are in the scene. We're still working on blocking where our characters will be at all times during the scene, but we've mostly figured out our set and we're making a lot of progress with our lines.

This week Johnny and I met on Wednesday for rehearsal. Our rehearsal consisted of a two  entire run through of the scene to try and get an idea for how the blocking should feel and how much movement we need to make people feel engaged. In between the two run throughs we rehearsed the third of the scene in more detail, trying to find the exact movements we wanted, and the space that is needed in between characters.

One thing we are still trying to figure out is how we can best set up the stage in order that the dialogue can have very natural movement connected with it. We don’t want to sit at a table the entire scene, but we also don’t want to walk around the apartment in a way that makes it seem like we are searching for something to do. It has to mirror real life.

Me and Sam met up, to like, to go through our lines or whatever and we were surprised at how like everything was just like so emotionally exhausting you know? Clearly, Sam and I need to like reach some sort of closure because he just can't decide if he wants to like get to know me or if he just wants to go for some other internet low flying trapeze artist bitch. Until next time, Rose!
