Hello, Amber here!

This week, Momoka and I focused on the quick back-and-forth exchanges/cutoffs of dialogue in our text. There are a few lines that the both of us still struggle with, and we didn't have as much time to rehearse for our in-class performance as we would have liked because I had an event to go to out of town. Once we have those exchanges completely down, we'll work on the notes that were given to us, like specifying our physical actions more.

We've also been discussing what props we will need, and I'm definitely going to try and replace my friend's empty tequila bottle with something more fitting because wow, Catherine's poor liver.

Working one step at a time is a great idea! With all the moving parts in a scene it is so easy to get overwhelmed. Taking the time to really pinpoint what it is that you both find difficult and zooming in to work on that will prove instrumental in the long run! I really loved seeing you present Monday. While I hadn't seen any previous iterations, it is shaping up to be fantastic! Amber, your line delivery was so good throughout! I can't wait to see what you two create 笑顔

Kj and I have been working on this as well. I think this is a good plan of action because I feel those cutoffs are very important to help with the authenticity of the scene.

Some of the lines in these are tricky, right? It seems like even if you have an idea for how to say it, you can't make it sound that way out loud, and if you can, then you realize that it just doesn't sound as good as it did in your head. I think trying to drop into the authenticity is the most important thing.
Not sure if I was making this comment to you or more for myself, but ah well.

Also, the note about the tequila bottle almost made me spit tea on my computer screen.

Bria: Since we have the script down I can focus more on the specific details and mannerisms of my character.  I'll slur my text a bit more to appear drunk and slow down my text. I'll also act more relieved to see Doug is okay when I enter the scene to demonstrate how I thought he might be dead

Eli: The one note that stuck with me was the end and trying to make sure that when I yell at Kayleen I remember to follow the note to be shocked with myself. I also want to figure out how to figure out what to do with myself when I am not speaking Kayleen has some moments where she speaks long enough for me to listen and not just stare at Bria. But my greatest challenge is figuring out how to be the childish Doug and be assertive post moving away from downstage.

It sounds like you both have identified plenty to work on. Best of luck to both of you! It sounds like Bria is focusing more on her voice and Eli is focusing more on his movement, but make sure that you are both doing both (e.g. acting drunk as well as sounding drunk for Bria). The tough part in a lot of this is combining the words and the actions. I know myself how hard it can be to think about both things at once.
  • DWDejour Williams - 2019年 04月 28日(日) 13:25
That would be a cool thing to add Bria. I think it will be very interesting to see how you incorporate the slurred speech into the scene. I am also struggling with that Eli. There are moments where Kj is talking alot and I feel weird just standing there and staring at him. I think rehearsal is the biggest thing for this because once it feels natural I think it will be easier to show body language that speaks while you are not.

I think the idea of slurring your words is pretty creative. I would have never thought of that, I think it goes really well with the scene. It almost brings it to life a little more, especially because you say in the seen that you had a couple of vodkas.

Great to hear about you immersion of props into your scene. Props are always a great way to help remember specific cues or gestures you want to work into the scene. If you guys haven't checked out the prop shop you totally should, they have a bunch of great stuff. Keep up the good work!

For this week, we focused on rehearsing the scene for our in-class rehearsal. When we arranged time to meet on Friday, we tried to work on the blocking and the physical action. We particularly talked about how to create a smooth flow of our movement in space so that our audience can be well-oriented. We also found ways to connect with the objects and props we have in the scene to make full use of what we have. On Sunday, we spent the afternoon working on layering our texts with our physical behaviors, there are still some gaps we need to fill in in the future but we are hopeful in terms of our final scene. In the process, we were able to learn more about our character's personality and their relationship.

Abdo and I also focused on creating a smooth flow of our movement with text as well! It can definitely be very challenging but worth all of the time you are dedicating to make it perfect. I know you guys are working hard and it definitely showed in your performances today!

I think the connection with props and objects is a good idea. This is something that I will take into my own scene because we have moments where we are just standing there and talking and I feel as if it is weird.

Hey, it's Zoe!

This week was pretty difficult for Daniel and I. We hit a sort of roadblock this week. Since we are nearing the end of the semester, we are both extremely busy. We weren't able to meet outside of class because of how conflicting our schedules were. We decided to do individual work on lines and the notes we were given on Monday. We both went through the script and highlighted every single pause, so we would know where every single pause is. We don't want any unnecessary pauses.

The video I included was from last week when we rehearsed in a room that had a little too many chairs.

Have a good week everyone!

Great set! I am looking forward to how you'd change the pauses in your performance. I did recall that I had some moments of anticipating/waiting when I saw your performance last time. I think taking some of those moments out in the beginning would help me getting the relationship between the two characters quicker as an audience. I loved the physical action and the voice the both of you created for your character, they seemed distinctive and lovely.

I really like how you went about highlighting each pause of your scene! I think that it really paid off for when you performed. I feel you on the busy semester and roadblock feeling- I wonder what we do to get over it haha! It seems like you approached that problem really well by looking deeper at your text when your partner wasn't around which seems like an awesome strategy. You guys have really developed your scene and I am looking forward to the future work you guys do!

Hey guys!

Just an update: We have been working very hard on our scene this week. We've got our lines down to a science. Now its just us getting our cut offs and beats correct. That's what we've been doing all weekend. We ran through our scene a least 30 times so we can be well prepared to show you guys (the class) our hard work.

We show our draft tomorrow and we hope to get good feedback from you!

Here's a little teaser trailer of our scene

Sorry for the delay guys. This blog is about Wyatt's and my rehearsal process for the second week of scene work.

So Wyatt and I have met up a few times out of class to run the scene, over and over. We have run it so many times I feel like I am saying the lines in my sleep. I really feel like the only way I learn lines is repeating the scene indefinitely. I also noticed that when I feel like were having some sort of breakthrough with the scene I forget my lines or change them without noticing because something new is happening inside of me.

When we get bored and feel like we are repeating the same thing we talk about how if feels and of there is something we can do to mix it up. One time Wyatt suggested just doing a really melodramatic run of the scene. Surprisingly that run actually felt the most "real," I think this is because we were just doing something different so our reactions were a surprise of the moment and we weren't afraid of being bad because we felt comfortable enough to be bad. We would also try the scene with different mop positions, sitting down at various times, and really just experimenting with anything we could think of. I think our scene has come a long way but I still sometimes feel like our performance is stale and actors actin and sometimes I actually feel myself cry a little but at the end because I find little ways that Rose relates to my own life, and just life in general. I wish I knew the difference in what causes each feeling and how to hone the really real feeling. It can't simply be luck, but right now thats how it feels. Randomly we will have a run-through that feels moving and randomly I will just feel like it sucks. I guess thats just part of acting笑顔

Anyways, thats what our week 2 was like, thanks guys!

After another week of rehearsals I feel like good progress is being made on our scene. This past week has been used mostly to incorporate all of the helpful advice and criticism we got after we performed on Wednesday. Having done our best to look through everything we heard I think the scene is already much stronger, but more rehearsals are definitely needed.

Simon and Victor! Love the vlog and your scene! From your performance on Wednesday I want to compliment the way you guys played status. It was very clear what Simon wanted and the complexities of their relationship. The exercise where we hold hands with our partner and decide when to push and when to pull reminded me of your scene because I feel like there are so many shifts from pushing to pulling and Simons character is struggling to get the push-pull just right. I am very excited to see your scene with the new blocking. I don't know if you guys are feeling this but I often wonder, when new props or something are introduced, how do we use them manfully rather then just using them to have something physical to do because that makes us feel less awkward. I can't wait to see how you guys use your updated setting to reveal more nuances to your characters.

This scene feels like the tension is slowly rising and falling until it reaches the breaking point where Victor yells, maybe try picking an explore with building the tension slowly up to this point so the yelling is even more justified and natural. Oh! Victor! I just remembered! I would consider exploring with moments where you feel like your character expresses likable characteristics, and where he can soften, depending on whether you decided if he actually is crazy. There could be moments where he really is crazy and moments where the audience sees his sanity, and therefor is left to debate in their heads whether your character really is crazy or not, you know, to give them something to debate in the car ride home from the play笑顔 Also Simon, I could not tell if you really believed Victor is totally crazy, and maybe thats it is supposed to read and that's awesome, I just wanted to share how it was received by me笑顔

Thank you for sharing your rehearsal experience and I'm looking forward to see where this goes!

      Hello, everyone!

Falcon and I come with many updates on our progress. This has been an exciting and productive week for us. We began by preparing the first few minutes of our scene. This meant running lines, blocking, and, of course, practicing. During our brief showcase this past Monday, I realized that a lot more work needs to be done to really flesh out all the moving parts of this scene. As Falcon mentioned last week, Peter, my character, only appears in this one scene. There is not a ton to go off of, therefore I have been busy testing out different "versions" of this character to experiment with what I have been given in the text. What if I play him like he wants to fight with Sara from the very start of the scene? What if I try acting like he is a bit more conflicted? Does he empathize with Sara at all? If so, how much? I am curious to see which one works the best! Falcon and I originally wanted Peter to be super standoffish right from the get go, but upon further experimentation, that seemed to be a little much. I've dialed it back a bit since then, and I think Peter is more believable now, and more complex.

So far, this week, we have been working on the latter part of the scene—lines specifically. I was surprised to see how quickly we had them memorized just by talking through them with each other. We ran them while walking around an empty classroom, which was surprisingly helpful. It allowed us to stay focused on them... but not too focused. The lines quickly became second nature—which was exactly the point!

Our scene is definitely shorter than some of the others, which means there are less lines (which is kind of disappointing for me since I enjoy talking a lot) but it also means that we will have a chance to really dive into each moment and sculpt it into the best version of itself. I'm really looking forward to getting into the weeds of this project over the coming weeks!

Hannah and I met several times this week. This week's work consisted of reviewing our lines and starting to discuss how our scene going to look like in terms of clothing and structure. For instance, Doug has an eye injury in the scene and we had to decide what to use to cover my head. So far we have practiced without blocking but we know that the next step is to practice with cohesion in order to add more cohesion into our scene and our lines. We also worked on putting beats on our actions and the backgrounds of our characters. However, we will spend more time discussing beats and actions once we have mastered our lines. We have also spent a quite bit of time discussing the given circumstances, such as Hannah's character car crash and the death of her father and how she should act when she has just learned that her father has died. Similarly, Doug was simply playing with fireworks and has a boyish charm which I aim to show in my acting. We're still in the early phases of learning about our characters in terms of the beats and actions.
