Examination of urban life in Pacific Rim cities;, how transnational networks connect social,, cultural, demographic, and economic flows and, practices. Topics covered may include, urbanization, urban planning, sustainability,, entrepreneurial cities, economic trade, agreements, social disparity, and urban, spectacles (Olympics, expos). Case studies may, include Shanghai, Sydney, San Jose (Costa Rica),, Seoul, and Portland. Students will engage in a, semester-long, individual research project, examining the linkages between Portland and the, Pacific Rim to explore the diversity of global, city-formation processes and examine how social,, economic, and political processes of urban living, are spatially linked.
