This course is designed to introduce you to narrative cinema via a conceptual overview of narratology (narrative theory) and its manifestation in filmic conventions across global film history. We begin with a consideration of various models of storytelling across the arts and culture before interrogating norms and deviations within the Hollywood paradigm. We then shift to international traditions and variations before returning to the domestic expression of cult cinemas. The course concludes by considering short films with myriad subject matter, engaging multiple genres in order to consider narrative style, structure, characterization, dialogue, and the unique systems of representation exclusive to the short film.
