Dynamics of social protest play an important role in transforming modern societies, though challenges clearly face all activist groups. By drawing on theories of social change, case study analyses, and student investigations into campaigns, we will develop a deeper understanding of the power and perils of distinct activist strategies. We will pay particular attention to activism campaigns undertaken by Black Americans, the LGBTQ movement, and undocumented workers in our community. Key learning objectives include developing knowledge of social movement concepts, improving the ability to write research papers, and strengthening public presentation skills.
