Examination of some of the main analytical
frameworks through which print media and the
mediation of culture have been examined. Using an
anthropological approach, students will explore
how print media as representation and cultural
practice have been fundamental to the formation
and transformation of modern social and political
relations. Focusing on print media
representations of China, in combination with the
ethnographic literature on the subject, this
course will think topically about China as news
and theoretically about China in the news.
