The study of abnormal psychology and psychopathology is an endeavor to understand the science and treatment of psychological disorders. This course will cover issues in defining abnormality; historical events and perspectives; influences on the development of psychopathology; societal reactions to abnormal behavior; classification, description, and assessment of mental illness; theory and research on causes, treatments, and prevention of psychopathology; dangerousness and risk assessment; legal and ethical considerations; and a survey of the major psychopathologies, including anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive and related disorders, trauma-related disorders, dissociative disorders, somatic and related disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, personality disorders, and paraphilic disorders and sexual violence.
