This course is both an introduction to graduate scholarship and a comprehensive and critical analysis of the American education system. Students will examine school as an organization and as a means of cultural transmission and transformation as well as the interdependence between the educational system and the socio-cultural milieu in which it operates. Students will critically examine personal and social values and educational practices in the context of educational history and the socio-cultural and political forces that influence them.
