This course provides analysis and reflection on entrepreneurial leadership in a crisis and is designed those who seek to engage in new business ventures and/or be a pioneer in a certain industry/profession. The purpose of the course is to increase one’s capacity to cope with stresses and disturbances such that one remains well, recovers or even thrives in the face of adversity. The course is focused on three topics that are important ingredients for success as an entrepreneurial leader: failure, resilience, and reflection.
The course uses a variety of means to learn theory and the art of leadership practice and entrepreneurship. In addition to the traditional methods of lectures and readings, the course includes movies, podcasts, peer to-peer discussion, and guest speakers. It is expected that students will be respectful of instructors, peers and guest speakers.
Student learning outcomes for the course are as follows:
• Explore the skills, attributes, and behaviors that are needed to be an effective leader in crises
• Demonstrate entrepreneurial competencies and how they differ from management skills
• Analyze how leadership impacts the development of vision, mission, values, goals, and culture
• Incorporate elements of entrepreneurship such as passion & purpose into one’s leadership style
• Understand the power and influence processes utilized to persuade others to adopt new attitudes
• Evaluate collaborative team dynamics and manage conflict and crises
• Outline the characteristics associated with failure and how companies fall
• Learn strategies to cope with stresses and disturbances such that one remains well, recovers or even thrives in the face of adversity
• Identify differing methods of reflection and demonstrate their use in post-mortem analysis
