This course gives students working in painting and drawing the structure and tools needed to develop independent work at the advanced level. Students may work primarily in drawing, painting, or move between the two as they pursue individual questions of subject, process, and material. Through a series of advanced assignments leading to a sustained and cohesive body of work, students conduct original research, identify relevant historical and contemporary precedents, and develop a more self-directed studio practice. Readings, writing, critiques, and individual meetings support the development and articulation of the work.
