We will cover classical and contemporary research topics in cognition by reading and discussing primary research articles. Laboratory sections will be used to gain first-hand experience with common cognitive psychology methods.

health, business, marketing, political and media
contexts, and the ethical considerations of using

Laboratory sections supplement, lectures and readings with practical experience in, neural anatomy, animal (rat) behavioral testing,, and neuropsychological testing.

We will cover a variety of foundational and contemporary issues in human neuroscience, and will engage in discussion of scientific methods and techniques used to investigate the relationship between the function of brain systems, behavior, and cognition. The course will primarily emphasize functional neuroanatomy, higher cognitive and emotional function (cognitive and affective neuroscience), the neurobehavioral underpinnings of pathology in humans (clinical neuroscience), and an emerging field known as “positive” neuroscience. Laboratory sections will supplement lecture and reading topics with demonstrations and experience with neuropsychological, cognitive neuroscience, and psychophysiological research techniques. Both the lecture and laboratory portions of this course strongly stress experimental design, data analysis, and scientific reasoning/information literacy. However, we also get to play with brains. Brains are pretty rad.

How does our connection to nature shape our mental and physical health? What role do green/blue spaces, wilderness, and environmental conditions play in human well-being? This course explores the intricate relationship between health psychology and nature, examining how our environments influence stress, disease, resilience, and overall psychological functioning. Through readings, lectures, and discussions, we will analyze the benefits of nature exposure, the consequences of environmental degradation, and the psychological dimensions of climate change, including eco-anxiety and climate grief. We will consider diverse perspectives, including Indigenous knowledge systems, evolutionary psychology, and public health frameworks, to understand how nature affects human flourishing across different cultural and socioeconomic contexts. Learning in this course is not a passive process; it requires active engagement with course materials, self-reflection, and collaborative dialogue. Students will be expected to critically engage with scientific research and real-world applications, integrating their own experiences and insights as we construct a shared understanding of the role nature plays in shaping human health. Together, we will explore how fostering a deeper connection with the natural world can serve as both a personal and collective strategy for well-being and sustainability.

What are the brain mechanisms that help us to form meaningful social relationships, to overcome adversity, to create, or to be brave and optimistic during challenging times? In this course, we will explore foundational and contemporary issues in Positive Neuroscience, an emerging field that examines the neurobiological and neurocognitive correlates of healthy, proactive behaviors and traits that allow individuals to flourish. We will primarily focus on research employing event-related potential and functional neuroimaging methodology, but your interests will also shape what we discuss. This seminar-style course has an investigative learning component designed to give participants experience with virtually all aspects of the research process.

Advanced undergraduate seminar examining current, theoretical and empirical advances in social, psychology. Extensive reading and discussion of, primary sources focusing on three selected topics:, social cognition, social influence, and group, relations. Exploration of various theories of space and the, sacred from disciplines such as religious studies,, geography, sociology, and phenomenology., Application of these theories to case studies from, a variety of religious and secular traditions,, encountered through a combination of primary, texts, documentary films, and site visits to, sacred spaces in the Portland area.

A historical perspective on the various religious
movements, collectively known as the Protestant
Reformation, that marked Europe's transition from
the medieval to the early modern period (circa
1400-1600). Review of medieval religious patterns.
The status of Catholic institutions and ideas in
crises of the late medieval period, the theologies
of Luther and Calvin, radical movements, the
political background of the Reformation, Catholic
responses to Protestantism, and export of Early
Modern Christianity beyond Europe. Readings and
discussions concentrate on recent social
historiography of the Reformation. Popular appeal
of Protestant religiosity, social implications of
Calvinism, roles of women in the Reformation,
family patterns and the reformation, class
structure, and competing religious cultures in
urban and rural society.

Introduction to Buddhist thought and practice. Indian origins, contemporary Theravada Buddhism, emergence of the Mahayana, Buddhism and society in Tibet, Zen and Pure Land traditions of East Asia, and the Western reception of Buddhism. Problems in the study of Buddhism.

In this course, students will develop a critical understanding of Buddhist philosophical concepts and religious practices.  We will read primary sources such as sermons, monastic codes, miracle tales, ritual texts and sutras, as well as ethnographies and secondary scholarship that will introduce us to contemporary problems in the scholarly study of Buddhism.  

Attention will be given to diverse notions of the path and goal of Buddhism, the dynamics of lay-monastic relations, the interplay of practical and trans-worldly concerns, and Buddhism’s transformations in specific historical and cultural settings.

Exploration of the history of religious transmission and mutual influence between Korea and Japan, which are separated by a mere 670 miles of sea. Primary and secondary source readings and, lectures are interspersed with visits to temples, shrines, museums, and sacred natural sites. During, three and a half weeks in Korea we will encounter its religious repertoire of Confucianism, Daoism,, Buddhism, and shamanism. We will next travel to Japan following the development of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism in their more or less diffuse and/or institutionalized forms. Understandings of enlightenment and the afterlife, religious mixing, and religion-state relationships will be examined.

Introduction to major themes and movements in
American religious history from colonial origins
to the Civil War. Consideration of Native American
religious traditions, colonial settlement, slavery
and slave religion, revivalism, religion and the
revolution, growth of Christian denominationalism,
origins of Mormonism, using a comparative approach
in the effort to understand diverse movements.
Central themes: revival and religious renewal,
appropriation of Old Testament language by various
groups (Puritans, African Americans, Mormons),
democratization of religion.

Impact of religion in modern America from the end, of the Civil War to the present day, emphasizing, the interaction between America's many religions, and emerging American modernity. The fate of, "traditional" religion in modern America;, "alternate" American religious traditions;, urbanization, industrialism, and religion;, science, technology, and secularism;, evangelicalism, modernism, and fundamentalism;, religious bigotry; pluralism; new religions and, neofundamentalism.
